PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and HTML5 For Dummies: A Practical Study Guide

A broad web-development book can help you connect several technologies, but reading it cover to cover is only part of learning. This guide explains how to turn PHP, MySQL, JavaScript & HTML5 All-in-One For Dummies into small, testable projects.

Choose the right book

The original title by Steve Suehring and Janet Valade is an older edition. Check the author names, ISBN and publication date before buying. Similar later titles may have different authors and coverage. Consult Wiley’s web development catalogue, your library or an authorised retailer.

Build in stages

  1. Create a basic HTML page with meaningful headings, navigation and a form.
  2. Add CSS and check that the page remains usable on a small screen.
  3. Use JavaScript for one visible interaction and practise reading browser errors.
  4. Run a local PHP example, then handle form input on the server.
  5. Add a small database and learn to use prepared queries before accepting user input.

Use current documentation alongside the book

Older screenshots and setup instructions may no longer match current tools. Verify commands and APIs in official documentation rather than forcing a modern installation to behave like the book’s examples. MDN’s learning area is a useful companion for front-end fundamentals.

Make each chapter measurable

Write down what your example should do, test ordinary input and an empty value, then explain the result in your own words. Keep practice applications local while learning. Do not place passwords or production data in tutorial projects.
